The first step in repairing damaged threads on a spark plug is to use a standard drill to clear away any debris. However, if using a special spark plug tap, pre-drilling is not necessary. It's important to note that flute less taps require bigger holes to be drilled.

Make sure to verify that the thread and pitch of the tap align with those of the bolt. It is essential to check this to ensure a proper fit.

The next step is tapping. This involves using special taps to cut the holding thread into the cleared hole. It is recommended to use a suitable cutting oil during this process.

To properly install the insert, you must first place it on the installation tool and adjust the ring so that the tang of the insert is aligned with the tang slot. Ensure that you do not work against the direction of the thread as this may cause the tang to break. Apply a light downward pressure and wind the insert until it is half a turn below the surface. With these steps, you can successfully install the insert without any issues.

Now that the installation of a new thread is complete, it's time to remove the tang from the tool. To do this, lift the installation tool and use a tang break tool. For larger sizes or spark plug taps, you may need to use long nose pliers to remove the tang. Don't worry about weakening the new thread with this process, as the narrow and exact tolerances of the installation ensure that the new thread is typically stronger than the original.
